The Pause I Didn’t Choose

I was encouraging women to care for themselves while quietly ignoring my own limits. Then my body made the decision for me.

I recently ended up in the hospital after pushing myself too hard and ignoring what my body had been trying to tell me. The hardest part was realizing how uncomfortable the truth felt: I spend so much time telling other women to rest, set boundaries, and pour into themselves while I was quietly doing the exact opposite.

Trying to carry everything

I was trying to carry everything, help everybody, and handle it all without saying I was tired. I had become so used to being the dependable one that I stopped checking whether I actually had anything left to give.

Somewhere along the way, being strong started to mean being endlessly available. Rest felt like something I had to earn. Saying no felt selfish. Slowing down felt irresponsible—even when my body was asking me to.

When life chooses the pause

Eventually, I had no choice but to pause. Sometimes the pause comes because we choose it. Sometimes life chooses it for us. Either way, I’m listening now.

This is not a story about suddenly getting everything right. It is a decision to be honest. I am not Superwoman. I need rest too. I need boundaries too. I need room to be cared for, not only useful.

What listening looks like now

Right now, pouring back into myself looks ordinary: resting without explaining, sitting outside, putting my phone down, laughing with family, journaling, getting dressed just because it feels good, and sometimes doing absolutely nothing.

I am learning that rest is productive too—not because it helps me return to work faster, but because I am a human being whose life is worth experiencing beyond what I can accomplish for everyone else.

You shouldn’t have to completely fall apart before you finally give yourself permission to pause.

What are you carrying that you need permission to put down?

You do not have to answer publicly. Just tell yourself the truth.
