Transitions can be uncomfortable—even when the change is positive. We often expect ourselves to move smoothly from one season into another. We think we should immediately adjust to a new routine, role, relationship, school year, responsibility, or stage of life. But our emotions do not always move as quickly as the calendar.
More than one feeling can be true
You may have entered a new chapter while part of you is still processing the last one. You may feel grateful about what is ahead and still miss what you left behind. You may feel hopeful one day and uncertain the next. More than one feeling can be true at the same time.
September sits between seasons. The warmth of summer may still be present while signs of change begin to appear. Nature rarely changes all at once, and we are allowed to do the same. You do not have to rush yourself into feeling comfortable with something new.
When life changes, even small routines can feel unfamiliar. Your energy may shift. Your sleep may change. Your emotions may feel closer to the surface. You may need more quiet, support, reassurance, or time than you expected. This does not mean you are handling the transition poorly. It may simply mean you are still adjusting.
Create small points of stability
Try not to judge yourself for needing time. Instead, keep one comforting part of your usual routine. Make space to process what is changing. Talk with someone who lets you be honest without immediately trying to fix everything.
Ask what this transition is requesting from you. Does it require patience, flexibility, courage, grief, a new boundary, or a willingness to receive help? Not every transition is asking you to become stronger or work harder. Some are asking you to soften, release control, and trust that clarity will come as you move forward.
There may also be pieces of the previous season you want to carry with you. You do not have to leave every comforting habit, meaningful relationship, or beautiful memory behind simply because something is changing. You can honor where you have been while making room for where you are going.
Learning the shape of something new
If September finds you between an ending and a beginning, be patient with yourself. You are not behind because you have not adjusted yet. You are not doing it wrong because the change feels emotional. You are learning how to live inside something new.
Let that learning happen gradually. Give yourself permission to take one day at a time, to change what is not working, and to keep the pieces that help you feel grounded. Growth does not need to be rushed to be real.
I give myself permission to transition gently. I can honor what was, welcome what is coming, and take the time I need to adjust.
What are you carrying that you need permission to put down?
You do not have to answer publicly. Just tell yourself the truth.
