A Little Joy Break

Make Yourself a Five-Minute Joy Menu

One song, one sweet treat, fresh air, a funny video, or a quick voice note—keep a tiny menu of things that bring you back to yourself.

When we are overwhelmed, even deciding what might help can feel like one more task. That is why a joy list should be made before the hard moment—not as a perfect self-care routine, but as a few easy choices you can reach without thinking too much.

Make the list honest

Write down five things that take about five minutes and genuinely shift something in you. Not what looks good online. Not what you think a wellness list is supposed to say. Maybe it is stepping outside, washing your face slowly, playing one song loudly, making tea, looking through funny pictures, stretching, texting a voice note, or sitting in the car without answering anyone.

Let at least one choice be free, one be quiet, one involve movement, one connect you with somebody, and one make you smile. Keep the list in your phone where you can actually find it.

Use it before you are completely empty

You do not have to wait until you are at a ten to offer yourself something kind. Try one item when you notice your shoulders tightening, your patience shortening, or your mind jumping from task to task.

Your menu might include a soft choice for low-energy days, a playful choice for serious days, and a connecting choice for lonely days. Soft could be closing your eyes while one song plays. Playful could be dancing badly in the kitchen or watching the video that always makes you laugh. Connecting could be sending a friend a voice note that begins, ‘I only have five minutes, but I wanted to hear your voice.’

Make the choices specific enough that you do not have to plan them later. Instead of writing ‘practice self-care,’ write ‘sit outside with my tea.’ Instead of ‘connect with friends,’ write the name of the woman you can safely text. Instead of ‘do something fun,’ name the song, game, snack, scent, or tiny ritual that reliably softens the moment.

Five minutes will not solve everything, and it does not need to. A reset is not a cure. It is a small interruption that says, ‘I am still here, and I deserve to be considered too.’ Sometimes that is enough to help you choose your next step with a little more room inside you.

If joy were on today’s menu, what five-minute treat would you choose?
